West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 5 June 2009

Parking policy ignores the people

AS both a resident and as a member of an active Westminster residents’ association and in the light of the council leader’s letter (Our duty is to ensure every penny counts, May 29) it is necessary to alert the citizens of Westminster to a possible grave deceit.
Setting aside Westminster City Council’s increasing disdain for the views and wishes of the residents, the Conservatives have introduced a seriously flawed, unpopular and unjust tax against motorbikes.
The council say they consulted and yet it has become apparent that certain Westminster councillors have deliberately ignored the residents.
Westminster’s own research shows that there was not one resident in favour of the introduction of the charge. As a result of dismissing the residents in such a shameful way, erroneous decisions have been made by less savvy councillors using skewed data and uncertain arguments.
And, to crown it all, those same councillors defy any form of accountability.
Many residents are now openly contemptuous of councillors over the introduction of this tax.
How can councillors justify ignoring the wishes of the residents and electors while taking benefits such as free parking themselves?
