Leader’s first reshuffle ‘arrogant’

WESTMINSTER Council leader Colin Barrow has appointed his new cabinet, with two long-serving councillors making way for new blood.
On their way out are former schools chief Sarah Richardson, who will be replaced by Marylebone High Street ward councillor Mark Page, and Audrey Lewis, who oversaw the customer services and communities brief, to be replaced by the Maida Vale ward councillor Lee Rowley. Insiders say the changes are less a vote of no confidence, rather a nod to two rising stars.
More controversial than the leader’s first reshuffle is the creation of seven new deputy cabinet positions, which opposition councillors have blasted as “jobs for the boys”.
The new positions swell the council’s expenses costs, with each taking home an extra £2,000 a year.
Labour councillor Guthrie McKie said: “Westminster council remains the most arrogant local authority in England.
“At a time when restraint is needed and an example of prudence in public affairs is required, Westminster Conservatives go ahead and add an extra layer of bureaucracy to their cabinet team.”
Cllr Barrow said: “This new cabinet structure has been implemented to ensure we continue to provide excellent value for money for local taxpayers.”
