Going for gold: Sam’s Olympics goal

NOT many council employees can say they’ve played for their country at the highest level, but that’s what 20-year-old Sam Whatley will be doing this summer.
The apprentice in the council’s adult services department, a right back in England’s Paralympic football team, is gearing up for the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia. And should all go well, then Mr Whatley hopes to be selected for the London Paralympics in 2012.
He said: “I am really excited about being given the opportunity to play football for my country especially as I have never been in the first team before.
“Even though I play in the right back position I am still going to try to score a few goals if I can.
“The coach thinks that we have a really good chance of winning so I am hoping to come home with a gold medal and then go on to play for the England team in 2012.”
