West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:17 April 2009

A bunny is for keeps

BECAUSE thousands of local adults are tempted at Easter time to buy a rabbit for a beloved child, a few months from now, our animal shelters will be inundated by cast-off bunnies.
Anyone considering buying a rabbit stop and think again.
Although rabbits can make wonderful pets, they are naturally fragile and timid. An active child who expects a cuddly pet can easily terrify or even injure a rabbit.
A well-cared-for rabbit should live 10 years or more and will require just as much love, attention, and veterinary care (often very costly) as a dog or cat.
So don’t give a rabbit to a child unless you know that its parents will be happy to take on a decade-long commitment.
