Two hard drug clinics ‘to replace West End services’
A MASSIVE shake-up of hard drug treatment services in Westminster is being planned behind closed doors.
The proposals were revealed at a meeting in King’s Cross to Camden residents last Thursday.
NHS Camden said it wanted to bring together all of its “West End” drug services under one roof in an unnamed site in Bloomsbury, Holborn or Covent Garden.
Camden’s health chiefs claimed the move, which has concerned residents in those areas, had been triggered by a review of treatment services in Westminster.
Rebecca Harrington, commissioning chief at NHS Camden, said the Hungerford Drug Project centre in Wardour Street “may cease to exist by this time next year” and that Westminster was planning to open two hard drug clinics in the south and north of the borough, effectively moving services out of the West End.
Needle exchange services in the West End, currently operating out of a van near Centre Point, are being shut down because of the Crossrail development at Tottenham Court Road.
Spokeswomen for Westminster City Council and NHS Westminster said it was too early to comment on any changes but confirmed that a review was under way to “meet local needs”. |
