RESIDENTS' parking spaces are set to be opened up to all drivers.
Parking bosses are running an 18-month pilot scheme where 500 residents will have to fight other motorists for their bays between 10am and 4pm from July in Queen’s Park, Abbey Road and Regent’s Park.
The scheme has been blasted by opposition politicians, who say it will make it harder for residents to park, and increase congestion.
Martin Thompson, for the Westminster Liberal Democrats, said: “Visitors clogging up the streets and parking spaces means local drivers spending longer driving around for a space, burning more fuel and making air pollution worse.”
Danny Chalkley, cabinet member for transport, said: “There are absolutely no plans to axe vital residents’ parking spaces in Westminster and we will continue to operate resident parking controls in order that people are able to park near their homes. Many residents have long argued for a visitors’ parking scheme. We have responded and will be piloting a scheme in three areas of the city which will allow residents’ friends and relatives to pay to park in underused residents’ bays during off-peak hours.” |
