New playwright’s first act wins him top prize

THE annual Westminster Prize, a competition for aspiring local playwrights, has been scooped by Graham Dickson, a young actor hoping to forge a career on the stage.
Dickson impressed the judges with Divine, a moving 10-minute fable of family loyalties.
He said: “This is the first piece of drama that has made it out of my scrappy notebook to be judged by a panel of experts, so I have been shocked and thrilled by the judgment.”
He described the rationale behind his drama: “I wanted to do something to escape, be a bit whimsical and fantastical about things.”
The competition received more than 90 entries, and the standard was so high that judges decided to award the two runners-up the position of joint second place. Conservative Councillor Gwyneth Hampson presented the prizes at a performance of the winning three plays.
