West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 27 February 2009

A question of disorder on streets?

I WAS fascinated to read the comments about the closure of the brothel in Dean Street by those who don’t live in that part of street but who are moved to pontificate.
For some reason the patch of Dean Street from Old Compton Street up to Meard Street has been plagued by anti-social behaviour for the last two years.
In fact residents did not ask the police to use their new powers to close the brothel but it’s just a fact that since it was closed, and indeed since it reopened without the large “model” sign, the large crowds of youths who were hanging around for various reasons have disappeared much to the relief of residents and others.
This issue is not about the safety of women but about disorder on our streets.
There are many
well-run walk-up brothels in Soho.
Do we really need brothels with workers imported from eastern Europe (or anywhere else for that matter) in times of recession?
Why not British workers for British jobs?
Our Safer Neighbourhoods team work rather hard – and much of it on overnight duty – and they do not deserve any
ill-considered and inaccurate comments
in the media implying there is some sort of secret campaign to close brothels.
