Judge sentences teenager who stabbed friend

A “remorseful” 16-year-old student at Paddington Academy has been sentenced to two years in a young offenders’ institute for fatally stabbing his 14-year-old friend and classmate Amro Elbadawi in a childish row.
Youssif Drissi confessed to slashing his friend’s throat on their way home from school in Dart Street, Queen’s Park, in March last year.
Old Bailey Judge Timothy Pontius lifted a ban on naming Drissi in a bid to deter youths from knife crime.
Drissi – described as a model student – admitted to manslaughter in January.
Sentencing, Judge Pontius said: “You genuinely regret what you did and, no doubt, you wish earnestly that you could turn back the clock. I accept there was no intention to harm him, let alone cause his death.”
In Drissi’s defence, Orlando Pownall QC said he was a model student who wanted to go university. He also said that Amro was violent and was known to carry knives.
Mr Ponwall said: “He knew the deceased had a capacity for violence and this was at the forefront of his mind. These two were not members of rival gangs. They were very good friends.”
The row quickly escalated from a play fight, going wrong when Amro was cut three times on the back after Drissi took a knife from him.
Amro challenged Drissi with two other knives but was stabbed in the neck by their homes in the Mozart estate, the court heard.
