15 families signed up for ‘recovery’
WESTMINSTER Council’s controversial scheme to tackle social deprivation has recruited 15 families.
The Family Recovery Project targets those in the borough who are deemed to represent the biggest burden to the taxpayer in terms of welfare benefits, social care, healthcare and criminal justice. Families who take part must agree to accept support or face eviction, benefits being withdrawn and even criminal prosecution.
A small team of staff are assigned to each family to try and ease their dependency.
Councillor Brian Connell, cabinet member for communities and economic development, said: “Our family recovery project represents a profound change in the way we tackle deprivation in local communities, based on a policy of prevention aimed at tackling the root causes of exclusion and not simply treating the symptoms.” |
