Buses set to be re-routed as Tube station revamp begins
BUS diversions around Tottenham Court Road Tube station that are expected to bring traffic chaos to neighbouring streets will begin this weekend as preparations get underway for the redevelopment of the station.
Among the routes affected by the first stage of the goverment’s £17million Crossrail project are the 176, 19, 24, 38, N5, and N19.
The diversions will last up to seven years, and have been slammed by shop owners in the area, who fear their narrow streets will become choked with bus traffic.
A number of buses will be diverted along Denmark Street, known as Tin Pan Alley, because of its parallels with New York’s famous music district, housing numerous shops and publishers.
A total £1billion investment is being put into Tube station, which is due to be completed by 2016.
Improvements will include: a bigger ticket hall nearly six times the size of the current one, new station entrances and more escalators.
The station is one of the most congested on the network, used by approximately 150,000 people a day.
Transport for London sent out consultation letters to residents and local businesses explaining the diversions in November. |
