Connaught Village fun: the carnival spirit was great, as Santa demonstrated |
Switched on: Nigella and friends enjoy light shows
TWO of the swankiest neighbourhoods in the borough went head to head in the battle of the Christmas lights.
Celebrity cook Nigella Lawson did the honours to flick the switch in Mount Street, Mayfair, while over in Connaught Street, Marylebone, on Thursday there might not have been a celebrity draw, but the carnival was so boisterous it could be heard in Lapland. Santa may well need a new suit given the number of mince pies on offer and there was enough mulled wine to float a galleon.
In Mount Street, it was the first time that garlands have been erected after years of opposition from local residents.
Peter Wetherell, chairman of the Mount Street Association, said: “Over the past few years we have seen a number of world-renowned businesses move into the area.
“We all know Nigella well, and she optimises the clientele that shop in Mayfair.”
Revellers in Connaught Street were treated to an angelic choral procession from St John’s Hyde Park Church, and students from Ravenstone and St James and St Michael’s school were also in fine voice.
Reverend Stephen Mason, from St John’s, stepped up to the switch. He said: “It was a delight to see the lights and to hear children singing carols and see them having so much fun and it was an honour to switch on the lights with Father Christmas.” |
