‘Insults’ in Oxford Street stabbing

A CONFRONTATION between two groups of men in crowded Oxford Street led to a fatal stabbing as dozens of West End shoppers looked on, the Old Bailey heard yesterday (Thursday).
There was “aggression from both sides, shouting, posturing and pushing” before Anthony Costa plunged a knife through the heart of a 22-year-old man, prosecutor Jacob Hallam told the jury.
The victim – who cannot be named for legal reasons – fell dying in a pool of blood as Costa, 19, from Walthamstow, fled with his two friends last May.
Costa denies the murder of the man from Islington.
“The events are captured in part by CCTV cameras at a variety of locations up and down Oxford Street,” said Mr Hallam.
The two groups traded insults and a drink was thrown, splattering a shop window
Costa was heard to ask a friend, “Are you going to take that?”, before he and his two friends moved towards the others. The man who died had a belt wrapped about his fist and was swinging the loose end from side to side.
“A woman saw this defendant in the act of murdering him by stabbing to the heart,” added Mr Hallam.
Costa fled, bumping into people as he went.
He dropped a bloodstained knife and ran towards Great Marlborough Street.
The trial continues.
