West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 7 November 2008

Westfield ‘hype’ in perspective

• THERE has been much hype on the opening of Westfield, and I wish it every success.
But let’s put things in perspective. Westfield expects to attract 20 million visitors a year, the West End attracts 200 million.
Three department stores in Oxford Street alone boast more retail space more than the whole of Westfield.
The West End has more retail space than Paris or Rome, with 600 shops, including 120 international and 95 flagship stores, and supports 285,000 jobs, with over 13,000 in the entertainment industry.
It also has 40 theatres which have had their most successful year ever, and visitors have the pick of nearly 1,200 restaurants representing cuisine from across the globe.
We’re in the middle of an ambitious multi-million pound plan to regenerate the West End ahead of 2012, when I assure you most visitors will want to experience the unique vibrancy and choice the West End offers, which a shopping mall, no matter how good, simply can’t.
The West End really is like nowhere else.
Cllr Robert Davis
Deputy Leader, Westminster City Council
