West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 17 October 2008

Road toll

• CONSIDERING that the City of Westminster has the most accident-prone roads, it is surprising that so little professional attention is given to analysing local road tragedies.
Last year 1,698 people became casualties on Westminster’s roads, nearly 33 every week of the year.
Five of them died, although that figure refers only to those dying within 30 days of a crash, not within a whole year. Nor do they include unborn children killed on the road.
Hit-and-run tragedies have become commonplace and last year there were 211 victims within Westminster.
We also learn that a total of 384 motorcyclists and 278 cyclists became casualties.
Motorcyclists had crashed into 52 pedestrians and cyclists had hit 14. Altogether 476 pedestrians became casualties, three of whom later died.
These figures are distressing enough but what is particularly odd is that they are not included in the official crime statistics produced by the local police.
