‘Model’ Maida Vale students set to fly the flag at United Nations
FOUR pupils from St George’s RC School in Maida Vale embarked on the trip of a lifetime on Tuesday to compete in the Model United Nations debating competition in South Africa.
The quartet are teaming up with City of London School for the competition in Cape Town, and the trip is being sponsored by HSBC because of St George’s status as a business college.
The team will compete in two debates; first on international intervention in Burma and then on the conflict between sovereignty and the international criminal courts, with half the team performing the role of Russia and the other half as Venezuela.
They will be competing against teams from all over Europe as well as teams from disadvantaged schools in Kenya and Ethiopia.
Member of the St George’s debating team Gina Antwi, 15, said: “We want to go out there and learn about different cultures, beliefs and opinions.”
If St George’s win the debate they will be off on their travels again for the next stage of the competition in New York. |
