West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 October 2008

Big Brother wants your fingerprints

• PICKING up on the current West End Extra workplace fingerprinting controversy (Hands off our fingerprints! September 5), I haven’t followed every word of it having been on holiday in the Sicilian mountain town of Petralia Sottana (population 3,950) in the Palermo region.
This year I discovered that Petralia’s local councillors are actively considering bringing in the use of fingerprinting for clocking-on purposes for council staff.
The small local library with a staff of about 10 persons is also under pressure to accept the practice.
Additionally, a brother of a Petralia bar owner, who worked in London in the catering profession as a waiter, was also required until around April of this year to provide his fingerprints for clocking on purposes in London.
Not surprisingly he strongly resented the practice.
Big Brother Plus is certainly on the march.
