An old-fashioned way of understanding age

STUDENTS at Pimlico Academy and Quintin Kynaston School in St Johns Wood have been learning about the science of ageing thanks to a new fashion project.
Fashion and science aren’t the most obvious of bedfellows, but pupils have been working with some of the finest minds in both fields to create a range of designs for the catwalk. It’s a world away from hairnets and frumpy skirts. Think zips, tassels and bold colours. Their work will be shown off at a fashion show, Design and Gerontology, set to take place at the Africa Centre Gallery in Covent Garden next Friday evening.
It is the brainchild of ex-fashionista Lulie Biggs. She said: “It’s not a political statement about ageism but more a way of sweetening the pill of science.
“You wouldn’t have thought kids would be interested in the pathology of ageing but they have really got into it. Now when they are stuck behind an elderly person doing their shopping they will have a lot more sympathy.”
