West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 September 2008

Too quick to cry foul?

• DOG fouling is a persistent problem in Westminster, as it is across the country, and I agree with Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg in his letter (Vanity projects are a foul waste of residents’ money, September 12) that more needs to be done to ensure dogs’ mess does not blight our streets.
Cllr Dimoldenberg rightly points our there are now two dedicated dog wardens in Westminster, but Police Community Support Officers and the council’s city inspectors also have the power to fine people who allow their dog to foul in the street.
Moreover, dog fouling is not sidelined for West End “vanity” projects as Cllr Dimoldenberg suggests.
While investment in the West End is key to the economic success of the city as a whole, we also invest heavily in our neighbourhoods.
This year, each ward has been allocated £100,000 for residents to spend on local priorities and this money is distributed equally and fairly across the city.
I’m glad to see that in Cllr Dimoldenberg’s own ward some of this money is being used for a project to educate dog owners.
Ultimately, however, responsibility for dog fouling lies with the owners themselves.
Dogs’ mess carries a number of health risks and owners must understand they have a duty to their local community to clean up after their dog and make use of one of the many bins we provide for this purpose.
Cllr Danny Chalkley
Cabinet member for
environment and transport
Westminster City Council
