Private bidders invited to run 2 new health centres

Health chiefs urge members of public to have say over proposals

PRIVATE firms are being invited to bid for doctors’ services in Westminster.

The Primary Care Trust has announced plans to set up two GP-led health centres, in Queen’s Park or Paddington and Victoria or Pimlico, and are asking the public to respond with their views.
A contract is to be put out for competitive tender for a doctors’ service open 12 hours a day, seven days a week.
Westminster PCT chief executive Michael Scott said: “We are now moving into an exciting new phase of investing and improving health services in Westminster.
“We want local residents to shape their own health services to meet local needs. We are keen for everyone to get involved and have a say in our plans.”
The Department of Health ordered all PCTs to have a GP-led health centre by 2010.
Last year, the Primary Care Trust conducted a survey of patients and found there was demand for longer and more convenient opening hours at GPs’ practices.
The PCT has now drawn up proposals and wants to find out more about what local people think about the plans and hear views on the range of services residents want there
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, leader of the Labour Group, welcomed the move.
He said: “These extra family doctor services show how local health services are being improved by Labour. There are already two new health centres on the Harrow Road and new family doctors in north and south Westminster will continue this real improvement in local health services from Labour.”
A series of meetings are scheduled starting on Monday, September 22 at the Abbey Centre in Great Smith Street Victoria.
