James Arnold
Feeling fine after robot blood vessel surgery first

THIS man is the first in the world to undergo life-saving blood vessel surgery at the ‘hands’ of a robot.
James Arnold, 78, was operated on by the Hansen Sensei robot. The surgery at St Mary’s Hospital was to remove an aneurysm that could have killed him any time.
Using robots for operations is common but it is the first time one has been used in vascular surgery. It is now hoped that the £400,000 robot will help the Paddington hospital tackle cases that were previously deemed too risky for surgery.
Professor Nick Cheshire, consultant surgeon said: “These technologies are proving safer and more cost effective than open surgery and this shows how our Trust has taken research from bench to bedside.”
