‘Social services’ man targets OAPs
POLICE have warned residents in Paddington and Belgravia not to answer the door to a serial burglar who preys on the elderly by pretending to be from social services.
The man, believed to be in his mid-50s, allegedly tricks unsuspecting pensioners into letting him into their homes under a bogus identity before stealing cash and other items.
He is believed to have struck at 14 addresses in Camden and Islington in distraction burglaries, and is now thought to be trying the ruse in Westminster.
He is described as white, 5ft 7 and is usually dressed in smart clothing, wearing Harry Potter-style round-rimmed glasses.
Detective Constable Derek Hutchison from Islington Police said: “We are asking pensioners not to let strangers into their homes even if they say they’re from the council, social services or similar.
“Before letting anyone in, telephone the relevant company or organisation to verify their identity and check they have ID.”
