How many people does it take to make a bowl of rice?
A MURAL depicting an enormous bowl of rice has gone up in Horse and Dolphin yard, in Chinatown.
Made up of 1888 tiny photos of local people and tourists, it has been described as a “new centre of gravity for artistic Chinatown”.
Designer Wing Kei Wong’s work will be displayed for two years following a public art competition.
She said: “It’s a project that combines my passions with my attachment to Chinatown.”
The rice bowl was chosen as a symbol of cultural unity. The number 1888 in Cantonese translates as “day of great fortune” – the mural is designed to bring good luck to all those who live, work and visit Chinatown.
The mosaic was unveiled by Councillor Alexander Nicoll on Monday. |
