West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Post office ‘rescue’ bid predictable

• THE news that Westminster Conservatives’ so-called “rescue” of the Harrow Road and Formosa Street post offices has failed was entirely predictable.
Of course, the council’s offer to pay £300,000 towards the costs of saving the post offices was always going to be insufficient and the Conservatives knew this right from the start.
But they deliberately raised local residents’ hopes, knowing full well that they had no intention of contributing enough to save either post office.
And it is not as if the council does not have the money to save both post offices.
In July the government gave Westminster City Council almost £13million to spend on local economic initiatives.
Instead of spending just a small part of that money on guaranteeing the future of both the Harrow Road and Formosa Street post offices the Conservatives prefer to spend all that money on improving Bond Street, Regent Street and Oxford Street for the benefit of big businesses.
Of course, if the threatened post offices had been in Mayfair, Belgravia or Knightsbridge you can be sure Westminster Conservatives would have found every last penny to save these important community services.
But, with typical lack of concern for the people of north Westminster, the Conservatives have decided to spend public money on improving the environment for the Bond Street designer shops rather than support the local community by saving these vital post offices in Harrow Road and Formosa Street.
Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg
Leader of Westminster Council Labour Group
