West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 22 August 2008

Wolfson residents can stay

• CONTRARY to your report last week (Pensioner fury at eviction threat), I would like to make it absolutely clear that no pensioners are being evicted from Wolfson House in Pimlico.
First, Westminster City Council wishes to see housing for the elderly brought up to modern standards and we have a general policy of encouraging housing associations to invest in schemes to achieve this goal.
Second, Wolfson House is an independent sheltered scheme run by Sanctuary Housing Association, which is currently looking at a range of options to carry out improvements aimed at raising standards, disability access and improving the quality of life for all residents. We are supportive of Wolfson House remaining as accommodation for the elderly.
Third, Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg’s claims that “residents are being forced to move from their homes against their will” are completely inaccurate. A number of residents have chosen to move to nearby Dean Abbott House – regardless of what happens at Wolfson House.
Finally, claims that Dean Abbott House is unsuitable for residents are also untrue. Indeed, Sanctuary Housing has confirmed to the council that Dean Abbot House is of a better standard than Wolfson House. The scheme has full wheelchair access to communal areas and individual units are capable of being upgraded to wheelchair standard.
We are rightly proud of our track record in supporting older people and are always looking to do more so they receive the services and opportunities they so richly deserve.
Cllr Philippa Roe
Cabinet Member for Housing, Westminster City Council
