West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 8 August 2008

They’re really bad sports

• THE news that Conservative-controlled Westminster City Council has been ranked as the worst in London for providing children’s after-school services should surprise no one.

This comes just a month after Westminster finished last in the London Youth Games.
Just over a third of pupils in Westminster attend schools offering the full range of services, which include after-hours clubs and extra-curricular activities.
The figure – 36 per cent – falls a long way short of the 60 per cent average for London as a whole and the government’s target of every child having the opportunity to access after-school services by 2010.
Despite the Labour government investing record amounts of money in local education services, because of Conservative penny-pinching more than 10,000 school-age children in Westminster are unable to participate in after-school activities which everyone knows are important to a child’s education and development. The truth of the matter is that Westminster Conservatives care little about education.
Services for children are regularly the subject of cuts and savings. Sports services for young people are woeful. Westminster Conservatives like to claim they are the best run council in the world.
The reality is that in terms of after-school services and sports provision we now know that they are the worst in London.
CLLR Paul Dimoldenberg
Leader of the Labour Group
City Hall, SW1
