West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 July 2008

Helping Sir Terry achieve his vision

• I AM a great fan of architect, the father of urban design, Sir Terry Farrell and was therefore delighted that he invited me to the lecture in celebration of his 70th birthday (Sir Terry’s homage to Nash, July 4).

What also marks him out as a remarkable role model, is his humility and generous recognition of the need for the contributions of the many to improve spaces between buildings.
In this respect Dan Carrier’s report of the presentation panel’s comments omitted my own contribution (from the floor questions) in questioning Sir Simon Milton on the continuing key issues of funding restrictions, and also the credit given by the panel to proposed improvements for Waterloo Place and Oxford Circus, by public realm specialists, Atkins.
All these proposals are likely to be the first capable of implementation and were developed together with many organisations inspired by Sir Terry’s lead over his 10-year campaign for the so-called “Nash Ramblas”.
The organisations also deserve the credit and encouragement to see the difficult funding issue through and include among many possible contributors: the City of Westminster, Transport For London, the St James’s Conservation Trust, the Crown Estate and English Heritage.
PETER HEATH,
Atkins Ltd, Euston Tower, NW1
