‘Two teachers in every classroom has paid off’

Primary schools win ‘outstanding’ accolade from Ofsted

TWO of the borough’s primary schools have received glowing reports in the latest round of Ofsted inspections.

St Joseph’s school in Maida Vale and Gateway school in Lisson Grove were both judged “outstanding” following two spot inspections in June.
At St Joseph’s, inspectors showered pupils with praise, commending their hard work and motivation.
Their report said: “As a result of the high quality of care, guidance and support the school provides, pupils’ personal development and wellbeing are outstanding. They clearly enjoy their work because all teachers plan lessons extremely well, which ensures pupils find them interesting and with just the right level of difficulty.”
Headteacher Daniel Macdonald put it all down to the staff.
He said: “What can I say. We’re absolutely delighted. This is our first ‘outstanding’. We put two teachers in every classroom and it has payed off. Nobody does it because it’s so expensive, but we made it work and I think it shows.”
On Gateway, inspectors singled out the school’s leadership and senior management team for special mention.
The report said: “A striking feature of the school is the way marking involves pupils directly so that they are able to discuss the feedback on their work with teachers.
“This allows all pupils to understand how their work is assessed and encourages them to try even harder.”
Inspectors also visited Our Lady of Dolours in Paddington, giving it a rating of “good”. They were impressed with the “positive” role the school played in the local community.
Their report stated: “Relationships between children are harmonious and they show respect and tolerance for each other and the adults around them. Those from minority faith groups are welcomed wholeheartedly.”
