Big companies leaving cigarettes mess
COMPANIES failing to clean up after employees who drop litter have been named and shamed one year on from the introduction of the smoking ban.
A blacklist of 33 organisations has been published, including McDonald’s and Tesco, which Westminster Council claims are leaving a “sea” of cigarette butts outside their offices.
Among the offenders is the government department responsible for the environment, Defra, which, despite a warning last year, is still failing to tackle litter outside its offices.
Other companies that have been told to clean up their act include Channel 4 in Horseferry Road, the French bank BNP Paribas in Harewood Avenue, and the Passport Office in Eccleston Square.
There are also a number of problem nightspots on the list. The Heaven Club, Greencoat Boy, The Nag’s Head, Renowned and Motion Bar have all been scolded as irresponsible.
The council forks out £32million tackling millions of cigarette butts in the street.
Councillor Danny Chalkley, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “It’s incredibly disappointing that one year on many organisations, including some very eminent names, are not tackling the unsightly mess of smoking-related litter left on their doorsteps by staff and visitors.”
Under new legislation, local authorities have the power to issue £80 fines to people caught throwing cigarette butts on the ground. |
