Home time as caretaker retires after 25 years

THE longest serving member of staff at St George’s School in Maida Vale has retired after 25 years of toiling to keep the school looking spic and span.
Francisco Martins has seen out 12 headteachers in his time as caretaker but, at 65, he says it is his time to go.
“I have loved every minute of working here,” said Mr Martins.
“Things have changed a lot since 1983. The kids are definitely better behaved. They don’t kick footballs at me in the corridors. I am going back to Portugal to get some sun.”
The father of three said his fondest memory was his time under Philip Lawrence, the headteacher who was murdered outside the school gates trying to stop a fight in 1995.
Current head, Martin Tissot, said Mr Martins was “irreplaceable”.
He added: “We’re worried the whole school is going to fall apart! He has been a great servant and all the children will miss him. If there was ever a problem Franciso would fix it.
“The reason the school looks so good is down to him. We can’t begrudge him his retirement, even if things do start dropping off.”
