A HGV gets in a jam in Dombey Street |

RESIDENTS of a quiet Bloomsbury street are warning that it is only a matter of time before one of the heavy goods vehicles that use the route as a rat run ploughs into one of their houses.
Fears have also been raised that the regular gridlock in the street could prevent ambulances which use Dombey Street to get to Great Ormond Street Hospital getting through.
Residents say their narrow road is not
suitable for the large vehicles – one of which they photographed getting into a scrape with a lamppost and ending up close to the front door of one of the terraced houses.
Warren Scott, who lives in Dombey Street, said: “These are 21st century vehicles using a 300-year-old road.
“The pavement cannot withstand the weight of the vehicles but they have to mount the pavement when they become trapped.
“It is only a matter of time before one of these vehicles goes through the front of somebody’s house.
“Ambulances using to Dombey Street would also be trapped on the street when trying to reach Great Ormond Street Hospital if one of these vehicles was blocking the way.”
Mr Scott says that he has spoken to Camden Council about the matter in the past but has received no response.
A council spokesperson said: “Our records show we haven’t received any complaints about this for two years. However, we are looking into Mr Scott’s recent concerns and, if necessary, we will look at proposals on how we can resolve it.”
A spokeswoman for Great Ormond Street Hospital said there had been no complaints about the road and she added: “Problems with patient vehicles having delayed access is not unheard of but in our opinion it is not due solely to HGVs.” |
