West End Extra - by JAMIE WELHAM

West End | News | Westminster| Police officer | hospital | scooter | Regent Street

A POLICE officer who tried to thwart a scooter gang by jumping on the back of one of their get away vehicles, “desperado-style”, has been released from hospital after falling off and being run over.
In what could have been a Jean-Claude Van Damme stunt, the officer chased two men down Regent Street when he spotted them trying to break into a store at around 1am on Friday.
After a scuffle, one of the men tried to drive off but was taken by surprise when the officer leapt on the back of the scooter mid flight.
He was carried along Regent Street for about 30 metres before losing his grip and falling off. Instead of making a break for it, the driver decided to run over the officer.
Despite the injuries the policeman managed to tackle the rider and make an arrest before being taken to St Thomas’s Hospital, where was treated for head injuries. He has since been discharged.
Police are linking the attempted break-in to a smash and grab raid half an hour earlier in Sloane Street and another foiled raid in Cambridge Circus.
Two youths have been arrested and remain in police custody.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the incident room on 020 7321 8682.
