Mr punch keeps slapstick alive

YOU might be forgiven for thinking the only place you can watch Punch and Judy is at Prime Minister’s Question Time..
But those stalwarts keeping the slapstick tradition alive evaded the political correctness lobby at the weekend to put on a show in Covent Garden.
The 33rd Annual Covent Garden May Fayre and Puppet Festival was held in the grounds of St Paul’s Church in Bedford Street – a stone’s throw from where Samuel Pepys first saw Mr Punch in 1662.
Punch and Judy professors and puppeteers from all over the country basked in the sunshine to put on a show for the crowds that descended on the piazza.
There was plenty for the non-puppet enthusiasts including folk music and Maypole dancing.
