Children’s chief set to step down
WESTMINSTER Council’s deputy chief executive and director for children’s services has resigned after eight months in the post.
David Hawker, appointed in October, is leaving for the Welsh Assembly. He will be replaced by Michael O’Connor in July.
Mr Hawker is the third director of children’s services to leave in as many years.
The 53-year-old was supposed to replace Westminster’s director of schools, Steve Farnsworth, on the Interim Executive Board, which replaced parent governors at Pimlico School when the secondary comprehensive was placed on special measures.
Mr Farnsworth will leave his post next week.
Westminster NUT secretary Padraic Finn said: “We are gobsmacked.
“There seems to be some fundamental issue causing senior officers to resign as soon as they are appointed.
“I am extremely concerned on behalf of my members about the destabilising effect of all of these changes.”
Karen Buck MP said: “He is the third director for children’s services to leave in as many years – it is hardly reassuring.”
Chief executive Mike More said: “David has made a notable contribution to the council in the short time he’s been here, and we wish him well in his new role.
“David will bring a huge range of experience in education and children’s services to his new role.” |
