Events boss ‘thought he had failed’
A JAPANESE businessman took his life because he wrongly feared an event he had organised would be a disaster.
Teruaki Watanabe, 59, an events organiser for electronics firm Hitachi was in London to organise a conference for its Europe employees.
Police were alerted by colleagues after he failed to appear for work on February 15. They forced entry to the company’s flat in Abbey Orchard Street, St James’s, and found Mr Watanabe hanging from a tie inside his wardrobe.
Police said Mr Watanabe, who lived in Tokyo with his wife and son, had left a suicide note.
It read: “I am a project leader and am very worried about the event I have organised. I forsee the chaos of the event. Everyone is sure to be disappointed. I have to apologise to Hitachi. I was defeated by my pride.”
Recording death by hanging at Westminster Coroner’s Court, Dr Paul Knapman, said: “He has decided on a course of action and that is very sad because we have later found out the event was a great success.” |
