Iconic bookshop plans for a new chapter

FOYLES, the famous bookshop in Charing Cross Road, wants to expand and build itself a new shop on the site where it was founded more than 100 years ago.

Foyles are attempting to buy a key site close to the flagship store in a bid to unlock a major mixed-use development project.
The Estates Gazette has reported that the family-run business is on the shortlist to buy the 90,000 sq ft University of Arts building at 107-109 Charing Cross Road.
The site is one of two West End locations being sold by Central St Martins, which is seeking around £30 million for the property, before it reopens in Euston.
Foyles, which has been based in Charing Cross Road since it was founded in 1906, recently bought the freehold of the 25,000 sq ft property at 111 Charing Cross Road, which is let to the university.
Foyles has been working on plans to turn the two buildings into a mixed-use development to be anchored on a brand new bookstore.
The Central St Martins building is a complicated site and would not be easy to develop on its own.
