Headteacher’s killer delays bid for prison release
THE man who stabbed to death the headteacher of a Maida Vale school will remain in prison for several months despite being eligible for release.
Learco Chindamo, 27, was given a life sentence in October 1996 for killing Philip Lawrence outside St George’s Roman Catholic School in December 1995.
His legal team have advised he should not make a bid for early release until December in hope of securing a successful application.
Under Parole Board guidelines rejected applications for life prisoners can only be reconsidered after a two-year gap.
Last year a row errupted after the Immigration and Asylum Tribunal granted Chindamo, whose mother is Filipina and father Italian, permission to remain in the country.
A Home Office minister instructed officials to apply for a review into his case as part of a government strategy to deport foreign criminals. But the decision was upheld in the High Court – ruling it would be “disproportionate” to remove the EU citizen.
Chindamo was born in Italy and moved to the UK at the age of six. He was aged 15 at the time of the attack. |
