West End Extra - by JAMIE WELHAM

Chaos as water work kicks off

COVENT Garden will be plunged into chaos when Thames Water starts digging up some of its busiest shopping streets next week.

The roadworks will extend from Aldwych to Trafalgar Square and are not expected to be completed until 2010.
The work will affect hundreds of restaurants and bars as pavements are dug up and traffic is rerouted.
Thames Water project manager Jaymen Patel said: “Unfortunately, work of this nature does bring inevitable disruption, but this huge investment will bring benefits to the area for years to come, as we should not have to carry out repairs here in the future.
“Although these pipes have served the capital well, they date back as far as the Victorian era and it is therefore essential that we modernise the network.”
