West End Extra - by JAMIE WELHAM
Published: 4 April 2008

Some bright ideas for Theatreland!

AFTER four years at the drawing board, work is about to start on a multi-million pound makeover of Theatreland.

Improvements aimed at putting the sparkle back into the West End’s biggest cash cow were approved at a Westminster Council meeting last month.
The first stage of the £6 million strategy is already under way in Shaftesbury Avenue, with builders due to start work on Cambridge Circus.
Improvements, which are due to be completed by 2009, include pavement widening, a reduction in street clutter and the introduction of new theatre lights to give the area more of a “Broadway feel”.
The regeneration is part of a vision to strengthen the area’s identity so Theatreland becomes a recognisable district in itself.
During the consultation a number of objections were received about the use of “pea lights” on the front of theatres.
But Westminster City Council’s director of planning Rosemarie MacQueen said: “Lighting is one of the most important ways we can create a sense of magic and occasion.”
