West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 4 April 2008

Why won’t Tories build affordable homes?

YOUNG people in Westminster are finding it harder and harder to get on to the property ladder.
Yet why is it that only 11 per cent of the new homes built in Westminster last year were affordable homes? Why have Westminster Conservatives made it even harder for young people to get a start in life?
And why were there just 16 new shared ownership homes built in Westminster under the Conservatives, despite a massive number of luxury homes going up all over the West End, Marylebone and parts of Paddington?
The fact is that if the Conservatives continue their policy of excluding those on moderate means from living in Westminster then our city will become more divided and a much less pleasant place to live.
Isn’t it time for Westminster Conservatives to join the rest of us in the 21st century and to plan for a vibrant, mixed community by insisting on more affordable and shared ownership homes in all new developments?
CLLR PAUL DIMOLDENBERG
Leader of the Labour Group,
City Hall,
Victoria Street, SW1
