Square to shape up?

• WESTMINSTER City Council is currently seeking feedback on its latest plan for Leicester Square (the third in seven years paid for out of public money).
With more than 50 cinema premieres per year, Leicester Square is a cash cow. Little of this has ever been invested back into the Square.
The gardens in the centre were given by Lord Leicester to the public. The gateposts at each corner confirm this, along with a long list of by-laws detailing activities which are not permitted. Since the council gave itself a licence most of these have been by-passed.
The new plan includes “refurbishing” the toilets, but part of the over-subscribed male toilets will become storage space for flexible seating and “events equipment” – to be replaced by “pop-up” pissoirs. No real increase in deterring street urination.
So, citizens of Westminster, what do you think? Consultation, not well advertised, closed on February 29. Why not send your views in to the West End Extra?
