Historic hotel restoration

A derelict hotel near Trafalgar Square used by the minister of munitions, Winston Churchill in the First World War, will be restored to its former glory.
The London Metropole Hotel in Northumberland Avenue will be turned into a luxury 283-bed hotel by its new owners, who bought the Victorian property for £130 million from the Crown Estate. Two years ago, the Victorian Society helped defeat plans to bulldoze the building which has stood empty since the defence ministry relocated offices in 2004.
