Hospital secures ‘bag’ cash

MORE than £20,000 in cash left on the front desk at a Bloomsbury hospital has been banked as a donation and will go to a new heart and lung centre for sick children.
The West End Extra revealed at Christmas the unusual circumstances in which a man, in his 40, rushed into Great Ormond Street children’s hospital, left the money in a brown paper bag on the counter at reception and disappeared.
A spokesman for the hospital said on Monday that, although it did know the identity of the donor, the cash was being viewed as a gift.
He said: “The police made the necessary checks, ensured it was not the proceeds of crime, and returned the cash to us.
“We’re grateful for their assistance. We’ve put it towards the new heart and lung centre we are developing at the hospital, where we have a challenging £31 million target to provide new facilities.”
The final figure of the mystery donation has not been revealed but is understood to be at least £20,000.
The spokesman added: “We have made no efforts to identify the individual.
“There are easier and safer ways of donating anonymously but if he chooses to donate in that way, we have no need to find him.
“It was a remarkable gift just before Christmas but we know at the holiday season people’s thoughts turn to those less fortunate than they are, and we accept the gift in that spirit.”
