Students protest at the top store that ‘loves students’

STUDENTS descended on Topshop to protest against “sweatshop” conditions they claim the company forces on its workers.
The demonstration (right) at the flagship Oxford Circus store on Monday was part of a co-ordinated, nationwide, action. The students are angry that Topshop’s owner Philip Green refused to sign up to the Ethical Trading Initiative, whose members include companies, trade unions and non-governmental organisations.
The student market is important to Topshop, which uses the slogan “We Love Students” and runs promotions in universities.
Sarah Waldron, from the group People & Planet which runs the Redress Fashion campaign, said: “Time and again, Philip Green’s business has been associated with unacceptable working conditions. If he wants to continue to attract students through the doors of Topshop, he must drag his company in to the 21st century and change his business ethics.”
Topshop declined to comment.
