Centre closed by fire to reopen

PLANS to reopen a community centre after it was destroyed in a blaze in 1999 have been unveiled.
Frank Dobson, MP for Holborn and St Pancras, said the Covent Garden Community Centre could open this year.
It will offer services for the elderly
The centre closed in September 1999 after a fire in the Seven Dials Warehouse in Earlham Street.
Mr Dobson said: “We will be having a meeting to discuss how to re-establish the community centre. We will need a treasurer, an executive committee and a secretary.
“We want to work together on this with the other community centres, we do not want a situation where they are competing.”
Jo Weir, chairwoman of the Covent Garden Community Association, said: “It was a massive fire that did untold damage. It has taken a very, very long time for the building to be rebuilt, but now it has it is good news. It means we can start bringing the Covent Garden community closer together.”
She said the CGCA hopes to move from their temporary Macklin Street headquarters into the new development.
