West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 15 February 2008

Estates are being dogged by trust not caring for tenants

• DOGS on the Peabody Trust estates are a widespread problem, which the trust have totally ignored for the past 10 years (Trouble With Dogs, February 8)
Peabody Avenue is a shining example.
The Peabody Trust have clear rules that no dogs are allowed under the terms of their tenancy agreement. Unfortunately, for the vast majority of tenants who respect the rules and fulfil their legal obligations under the terms of said agreement, Peabody Trust fail to fulfil their legal obligations to their tenants.
Westminster Ward councillors have been aware of Peabody Trust riding roughshod over their tenants’ rights for many years; this includes their failure to enforce the rules of agreements and to maintain their property in line with the Housing Act. This is surprising considering the public funding Peabody Trust have received from WCC and the amount of deals and agreements WCC have with Peabody Trust, notwithstanding the close relationship councillors have with the trust’s employees.
In this age of human rights it must be apparent to all right-minded people that local government would not turn a blind eye to the plight of their community in favour of a major company.
Surely we all believe that local councillors would fight tooth and nail for their voters’ rights to decent housing, compliance with the rules and regulations as set out in a tenancy agreement, fair rents and a fair service.
I find it hard to believe that they would dismiss the misery caused to tenants just to further the cause of a major corporation, unless perhaps there was something in it for them!
