Dragon Hall teens enjoy Duke of Edinburgh success
COVENT Garden teenagers were rewarded for a hard year’s toil on Tuesday night.
Eighteen young people (pictured) received Duke of Edinburgh awards for a series of projects – including a four-day hike in Buckinghamshire and important lessons on road safety, gym and sports – set up by organisers at the four-year-old Dragon Hall community facility.
Organiser Shafiq Rahman said: “Road safety is important – a lot of these teenagers are just about to reach the driving age and the sports help to keep teenagers off the street. It is really important for the youth at Dragon Hall to show that they are being recognised. I am really proud of them.”
He added: “This year we are going to try and reach out to the isolated ethnic community.
“There are many Muslim females who live here but do not socialise and are not getting involved. We need to break down those barriers. We will be running a series of community events and run language courses for people with English as a second language.
The party, which drew around 100 familiar faces from Covent Garden, was also a swansong for Emma Dobson who has run the centre in Stukeley Street for the last four years.
Her replacement, Helen Bryant, said: “When she came to Dragon Hall it was just a shell – but now hundreds of people are coming through the doors.” |
