Community raises thousands for disaster relief in Bangladesh
A CHURCH Street councillor has raised thousands of pounds from one of the most deprived wards in the country for cyclone-hit Bangladesh.
Councillor Abdul Aziz Toki turned to the Bangladeshi community for help following November’s natural disaster.
Mr Toki was repaid with more than £6,000. He said: “I contacted the local Bangladeshi people in Church Street, Harrow Road, and Queen’s Park, and asked them to contribute.”
He then travelled back to his home country and the Church Street funds went directly into the construction of 60 houses and 20 water pumps in the southern Bangladeshi region of Southkali.
Cllr Toki said: “It will take these people a lot of time to recover, their infrastucture has been completely destroyed. Many of the people affected are fishermen who have lost their boats and nets. This is where we help.”
He said he received support from MP for Regent’s Park and Kensington North, Karen Buck, and Labour colleagues, including Cllr Murad Qureshi. He also praised the chair of the North Westminster Cultural Centre, Shamsu Miah.
Cllr Toki plans to return and said: “I’m talking to local Bangladeshis to contribute again.” |
