Guantanamo Bay protesters spend night in camp ‘cells’

CAMPAIGNERS dressed as Guantanamo Bay inmates held a vigil throughout the night taking turns to sit in a mock prison cell ahead of a demonstration outside the US Embassy today (Friday).
As the American Supreme Court meets to determine the legality of indefinite detention under military control at the US naval base in Cuba, protesters gathered around a cage built to the exact same dimensions of a Guantanamo cell.
Amnesty International director Kate Allen and performance artist Jiva Partiphan were the first volunteers to enter the cage at 5.30pm yesterday.
Ms Allen said: “The opposition to Guantanamo is growing stronger all the time. This year we are backed by the support of over 1,000 parliamentarians from around the world – including 250 from the UK – who have joined Amnesty’s call for Guantanamo to close.”
Moazzam Begg, released from the camp three years ago without charge, will also be attending the protest, which starts at 10.30am today
The demonstration is accompanied by others across the globe.
