West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The same religion? Perhaps not

• ONE of the worst forms of hatred is inverted hatred. You justify your hatred of others on the grounds that they hate you. The statement by Martin Pendergast is a good example (Gay Catholics pledge to defy church mass ‘hate’ campaign, December 21).
The group who protest in Soho are individuals who go there for their own reasons. There are about a dozen of them. Most are disgusted at the Westminster Diocese’s claim that these masses are according to the catechesis and “mind of the Church” when, in fact, we see those who attend the masses walking in Gay Pride marches. Again, there is a slur put on every Catholic parish in London – that gays are not welcome. These masses are open to everyone so why do they not just attend their local churches? I have still to meet any Catholic who has heard a priest preaching an anti-gay sermon.
If they are only content if they can run around telling everyone of their sexual orientation then they bring divisions on themselves. If gay means as Good As You then there are Catholics who, though disagreeing with the gay lifestyle, would admit that in the eyes of God perhaps gay people are better. Catholics go to church as sinners, but if we deny our sin then what are we doing at mass?
Are we of the same religion? The universal church teaches that homosexuality is a sin. If the gay community does not accept this then perhaps the answer to the question is “No”.
